FRANCE. Kingdom (First Restoration). Gold 40 Francs Essai (Pattern), 1815-A. Paris Mint. Louis XVIII. PCGS SPECIMEN-63.Maz-723 (R5); Gad-1091.(a); T&T-2043.b.2 (this coin illustrated). Weight: 12.81 gms. Plain edge. By Pierre-Joseph Tiolier. An EXCEEDINGLY RARE type, this specimen offers an abundance of dazzling brilliance and luster, with only lightly scattered friction in the fields and an alluring frosted nature imparted unto the devices that yields a great cameo contrast. The authors of T&T, where this example serves as the plate coin, mention that the plain edge versions were not struck during the competition of 6 March 1815, but rather on the peripheries of the competition at a slightly later point, possibly following Napoleons "100 Days" return to power later that month. To view all items from the Richard Margolis Collection, click here. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Vinchon in 1997 for $4,943).
