1811 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-106. Rarity-2. Small 8. MS-65 (CACG).Die State 106.1. A handsome Gem, both sides are warmly toned in a blend of pewter and golden-gray. Evidence of die fatigue is clearly seen around the obverse periphery, but Libertys portrait is bold and the reverse is sharply to fully defined in most areas. Smooth, billowy mint luster throughout. The 1811 Overton-106 may be a common variety in an absolute sense, but it is rare in the finest Mint State grades. As an early date in the Capped Bust half dollar series, such pieces are particularly prized among specialists; Gems are more easily located from the later date issues beginning in the mid-1820s. The CACG MS-65 example offered here is included in the Spring 2025 revision to Stephen J. Herrmans AMBPR for Bust half dollars (as NGC MS-65), in which it is tied for CC#2.PCGS# 6097.
