1737 (ca. 1864) Higley Copper. Copy by John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB-10, Kenney-4, W-14270. THE VALVE OF THREE PENCE / CONNECTICVT, 3 Hammers. Copper. MS-64 BN (PCGS).28.1 mm. A beautiful example with pleasing faded red undertones across both sides of the otherwise warm copper-brown surfaces. Soft cartwheel luster and a notable lack of marks add to the visual appeal. One superficial patina spot is noted on the lower right reverse but is fairly inconsequential. Essentially perfect centering on both sides with rims complete.<p>It is believed that Bolen struck 40 examples in copper, as evidenced by the one in the ANS collection that is so marked on the edge. Dr. Edwards probably also struck a few, but it is unknown how to decipher them. A well-executed copy of the old Granby cent by the talented Mr. Bolen, and one of the classics of his series. From the Claremont Collection. Earlier ex Bowers and Merena, by direct sale; our sale of the Collection of Larry L. Terrell, May 2019 Baltimore Auction, lot 3281.
