SOUTHERN HAN: Anonymous, 900-971, lead cash (3.0g), kai yuán tong bao // bao bao, graded 80 by GBCA Grading Company, VF-XF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection. There is a great variety of these types of crude lead cash coins attributed to the Southern Han/Chu area, circa 900–971; some have crescents or characters on the reverse. Characters and legends are often reversed because the incompetent engravers had not mastered the art of engraving in negative to make the molds. Some specimens have meaningless characters or hybrid inscriptions.
