(t) HONG KONG (SAR). Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China. 100 Dollars, 1.2.1912. P-45cts. KNB30SS. Color Trial Specimen. PMG Uncirculated 61.

A magnificent color trial specimen of the Wooden Bridge 100 Dollars printed by Waterlow & Sons. Printed signature of Dickson at lower right. An exquisitely engraved and elaborately colored work of art with blue borders surrounding two scenic vignettes at left and right and a sun ray motif. The reverse is in green and black, with the bank building at the center and allegorical objects symbolizing the four main regions where the bank was active at the time.

This note is one of the more famous in the entire Hong Kong series owing to the scarcity of genuine printed notes, whether in color trial, specimen, or issued form. Issued notes are printed in green, contrasting nicely with the dark blue seen on this color trial. The PMG population states three, one, and three examples have been graded of each format, respectively, as of the time of cataloging of this piece. Still, your cataloger has his doubts whether all three of the issued notes in the population report are genuine examples, as this note is notorious for fairly well-made contemporary forgeries that found their way into various third-party holders in the past. A genuine issued example does exist, but it is the catalogers belief that it hasnt been graded by PMG as of yet. <p>Regardless of the exact number of genuine notes extant, we can say with certainty that very few exist, and this note is one of the genuine color trials that would fit rightly in any advanced collection of Hong Kong paper money. This is a great opportunity to add this legendary note to your collection and one of the highlights of the present sale. Previous mounting remnants and lightly toned paper limit the grade, but it still presents well. This is one of those notes where we can confidently say that we urge you not to regret bidding one more increment after the gavel comes down. PMG Comments Previously Mounted. No
