(t) CHINA--EMPIRE. Board of Revenue. 1 Tael, 1853 (Yr. 3). P-A9a. S/M#H176-1. PMG Very Fine 25. (t)This lot was manufactured in China (including Hong Kong), Canada, Mexico, Russia or Republic of Belarus and was sourced from outside the United States for this auction after tariffs were enacted by the United States. Please consult your tax adviser with any questions. Furthermore, any lots subject to an import tariff will be shipped directly from our Hong Kong offices and shipments to the United States will be subject to our international shipping chart. A tidy and appealing example of a 1 Tael issued by the Board of Revenue in 1853. The note has a Ren prefix, indicating that the note was paid to the Military Rations Bureau (Liang Tai). This prefix appears on the notes in 1853, 1854 and 1858.
Ever increasing inflation from the unchecked issuance of these notes meant they were officially discontinued in 1860. Still, on this note, we see a red stamp stating Reissued in Jiangbei in spring of the 11th Year [of Xianfeng, 1861]. Therefore, this note should be one of the very last Board of Revenue 1 Tael issued and should command a considerable premium over similar notes that do not have this over stamp.
