1686 French Royal Family Medal. Betts-76. Bronze. MS-65 BN (PCGS).41 mm. 447.5 grains. Plain edge. Obverse A / Reverse C. The first of a series of Betts-76 medals, linked by design motif to Betts-75 and thus popular for its putative association with Native Americans. Our consignor mastered the die varieties and die states of this Betts number, creating the remarkable run of these seen here. This one is frosty and lustrous, displaying a rich and even shade of chocolate brown. The surfaces are problem free and the designs are fully developed. A large rim cud is seen on the reverse below 3 oclock, along with typical Paris Mint filing in the area. This is an extremely choice specimen of this elusive Betts number. From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier ex John W. Adams Collection; Barry Tayman, November 2015.
