CHINA. Kiangnan. 7.2 Candareens (10 Cents), ND (1897). Birmingham (Heaton) Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-66. L&M-213 (this coin illustrated [8th ed.]); cf. K-69 (for regular issue); cf. KM-Y-142 (same); cf. WS-0791 (same). An EXCESSIVELY RARE pattern issue struck at Englands Heaton Mint in Birmingham, this stunner is exceeded in the PCGS census by just one other. Exceptional toning elevates the dragon side, which the old Kiangnan-style dragon graces, with a razor-sharp and exacting strike observed throughout. The fields are wholly clear of any issue, with a mirrored reflectivity seemingly omnipresent no matter where one gazes. So wondrous is its eye appeal that its presence as the plate coin for the type in L&M is instantly understood. While we have offered other denominations from the celebrated Heaton Mint series, this represents the first such offering of the 7.2 Candareens denomination, and it is no doubt a tremendous specimen that will have no shortage of enthusiastic participants.
