DENMARK. Rose Noble, 1627. Copenhagen Mint. Christian IV. NGC MS-64.Fr-48; KM-51; Hede-23A; Sieg-143.1; Schou-1; Bruun-5504. Weight: 8.91 gms. Mintmaster: Nicolaus Schwabe. Only three examples of this magnificent coin has been registered, the present, the one in the National Museum of Denmark and the one in the collection of Bille-Brahe that was bought by Bruun and sold at the auction of his duplicates in 1925 (Lot #2014).
An astonishing near-Gem this is the ideal target for even the most discerning of collectors.
The inspiration for this beautiful and amusing type came from the English Rose Nobles that were widely used in international trade. In contemporary official accounts the type is referred to as a "Guldridder" from the Dutch, "gouden rijder". The portrait on the 1627 issue is very different from and vastly superior to the ones minted in 1611 - 1613 and would merit a type of its own. From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 816 in his collection.
