INDIA. Louis XV Victories in India/Gingi Silver Medal, 1750. NGC MS-61.CMP-2356. Unsigned. Diameter: 36mm. Obverse: Moor encampment with lightning bolts striking from above; arms, flags, and drums laying in the foreground; perimeter legend MAURI . QUATER . A . GALLIS . FUSI. above, REG . LVD . XV . / MDCCL. in the exergue below; Reverse: Citadel under bombardment from twin cannons in the foreground; perimeter legend URBS GENGI EJUSQUE SEPTEM ARCES UNA DIE EXPUG. above, GUB . I . DUPLEIX / MDCCL in exergue below. The fortified city of Gingi, located approximately 50 miles from Pondicherry, was taken by Field Marshal Marquis Bussy-Castelnau, under the orders of the Marquis Dupleix. The town was occupied within the day, but the locals had considered the ring of citadels to be impregnable. Bussy-Castelnau, using the cover of darkness, occupied all three by daybreak. Bussy-Castelnau would later be governor of Pondicherry from 1783 to 1785. The French East India Company was reconstituted in 1785, but its monopoly was broken by the French Assembly in 1791, and finally liquidated in 1794.<p>This medal offers cabinet-toned surfaces of deep argent graced with generous gunmetal toning and splashes of gold, russet, and hints of cobalt. Of the utmost rarity. Highly desirable.Margolis had a few rather overt interests in his collecting of medallic art. One such theme was that of medals pertaining to mans earliest pursuits to conquer the heavens in the form of ballooning. The European exploits of the late 18th century are contained here across many different country categories. Also quite noticeable was his interest in the medallic art of Jewish engravers, such as Jakob Abraham and his son, Abraham Abramson, among numerous others. Across this selection of medals, these themes and topics will become obvious, adding further dimensions to the already intense focus with which Margolis pursued his collecting. From the Richard Margolis Collection.
