BURUNDI. Banque du Royaume. 500 Francs, 15.5.1961. P-6. PCGS Currency Gem New 66 PPQ.The second highest denomination of the provisional series of notes from Burundi, seen with black overprint and offered her in exceptional Gem Uncirculated condition. Burundi gained its independence from Belgium on July 1, 1962. The transition to self-governance followed a lengthy period of colonial rule, marked by significant social and political changes, the impacts of which would last for decades to come. Following independence, Burundi faced immediate challenges, including ethnic tensions and power struggles between the Hutu and Tutsi groups. The new government sought to establish stability and build a national identity with the issuance of its first paper money as an initial step. Except for some of the lower denominations, this provisional series (along with a similar provisional series from neighboring Rwanda, which had been in a currency union with Burundi for a few years after independence) is very difficult in better grades. Small groups have turned up over the years, but more often than not the quality is lacking. The middle and higher denominations, in particular, are rare in the best of grades. This 500 Francs is no exception, and the present offering will provide the winning bidder a rarely encountered opportunity to acquire this type in top grade. The note itself comes with fresh, original paper, strong embossing, and a high-quality appearance. Without a doubt, this is an outstanding opportunity for the specialist of independent Africa, and not one we expect to repeat anytime soon.
