From the Collection of an Alexandrine Numismatist, formed before 1955./iIsmail Pasha was the Khedive or viceroy of Egypt beginning in 1867. He proceeded to heavily invest in Egypt’s infrastructure, including the Suez Canal, and other internal reforms and improvements. Combined with the crippling costs of an unsuccessful war with Ethiopia, Egypt became insolvent and the financial situation became dire enough that Great Britain and France decided to depose Ismail Pasha in 1879. !--Gold--
