(t) HONG KONG (SAR). The Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China. 5 Dollars, ND (1911-22). P-41s. KNB21S. Unissued Pattern Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
Without serial numbers, partially printed date of 19__, blue on pale orange, bank coat of arms at centre, denomination at each corner, rice pounding scene at left and sampans at right, black printed manuscript signature at lower right, overprinted SPECIMEN in red and also a blue circular Waterlow seal.<p>A unique note showing that the Bank considered issuing these notes with partially hand written dates, a practice since the day it started to issue banknotes in 1862. Therefore, the note is not a simple specimen but rather an unissued pattern. The cataloguer is unaware of the reason why the Bank decided on printed dates in the end but perhaps the volume of notes printed began to increase and the additional time to fill in the day, month and year for each note would make signing the note too laborious. A richly designed note in superb colours deserving of a special place in any high end collection of Hong Kong banknotes.
