CHINA--FOREIGN BANKS. Deutsch-Asiatische Bank. 50 Dollars, 1.3.1907. P-5a. PMG Very Fine 20.
Tsingtau branch. An exceptional issued 50 Dollar from the Tsingtau branch of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank. One of just two such issued notes in the PMG population report, both at the same grade level. Tsingtao, today known as Qingdao, was a strategic port city under German control, which had significant implications for regional trade and military presence. The city, having been leased to Germany in 1898, was undergoing extensive development, including the construction of modern infrastructure and the expansion of its harbor facilities. This issued note has some specks of rust in the margins, but none of the actual design is impacted. Pleasing purple color is seen, and the boldly signed fountain pen signatures confirm its status as a fully issued note. In our recent October 2024 Hong Kong auction we sold an issued $25 from this branch for $144,000, the record price for an issued Deutsch-Asiatische Bank note in our lengthy auction history. We will keep our estimate more modest for this piece, but expect spirited bidding on this piece, as it is about equally as rare as that $25. PMG Comments "Rust."
