Spared redemption, this example likely sat undisturbed at the bottom of a safe-deposit box or within the confines of a period cash hoard for decades before finding its way to the numismatic marketplace. At center, a portrait of President Ulysses S. Grant can be observed and cuts a remarkable contrast against the overprinted and engraved elements of the design and later iterations of his portrait. The bright yellow-gold Treasury overprint is also worthy of praise on account of its vividity and clarity which is frequently lost at lower grades. Dispensing with the orange-gold backprint; a vignette of the United States Capitol Building shared with all small size $50s stands in remarkable clarity looking Northwest towards the Foggy Bottom and Georgetown neighborhoods while individual buildings such as the Smithsonian Castle and various monuments can be seen further in the background.
