(t) CHINA--REPUBLIC. Lot of (2). Central Bank of China. 2 Yuan, ND. P-Unlisted. Front & Back Archival Photograph. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. (t)On September 1, 2019, the United States enacted new tariffs on collectors items of Chinese origin, including bullion and numismatic coins and banknotes. Dr. Sun Yat Sen at left, signatures at centre left and right, the reverse with an ornate frame with the Kuomintang emblem at upper centre, vignette of anti aircraft artillery. PMG Comments on Certification #2314977010 Minor Stains.TDLR designed a new series of banknotes in 1943. As was common practice at the time, hand painted models were made, mounted on card, and subsequently imaged for records. This is one such example. The original design on the obverse was believed to be the Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum and the reverse various scenes from the Sino-Japanese War. However, the Central Reserve Bank of China, a Japanese Puppet Bank, also issued notes showing the Sun Yat Sen Mausoleum on the reverse and in order to avoid confusion, the Central Bank changed the obverse design to only show a portrait of Dr. Sun Yat Sen but kept the war scenes on the reverse. Ultimately, even the reverse design was changed to a simple geometric guilloche stating the denomination. This pair of photographs, along with those for other denominations, are now the only evidence that these designs existed and illustrates the hardships the Chinese nation endured in the early 1940s. These photos and presumably the hand painted models were originally stored at the HSBC Building on The Bund but the archives were dispersed after the founding of the Peoples Republic of China in 1949.
