(t) CHINA. Sinkiang. Silver Sar (Tael) Pattern, AH 1325 (1907/8). Kashgar (Shufu) Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). NGC EF Details--Cleaned.
L&M-743 (this coin illustrated [6th/7th ed.]); K-Unlisted; KM-Unlisted; WS-Unlisted; SGSC-113 (this coin illustrated).
An <strong>EXCEEDINGLY RARE</strong> pattern issue that is missing from many of the standard references, this Sar, <em>known as the "Telegraph Tael</em>,<em>"</em> garnered its appellation on account of a secret aspect that otherwise went unnoticed for decades. When viewing the edge, one notices a rather bizarre code presented in Chinese numerals. Reading 6398-3276-0001-0357, the mysterious string of numbers was discovered to correspond to the codes assigned in the Chinese telegraph codebook. According to this book, the phrase reads 足湘一兩, or "1 full Tael of silver <em>hsiangping</em>." Meanwhile, the dragon side features the mythical creature within a border of stars and crescents, indicative of the Islamic culture firmly rooted in the province. Some light handling and noted cleaning is observed, with an electrified teal and seafoam green nature beginning to return to the dragon side, while the characters side remains a bit more mottled with amber hues. Nevertheless, a tremendous opportunity that will present itself far fewer than the numerous blue moons encircling the dragon. From the SGSC Collection.
