(t) CHINA. Sinkiang. Silver Tael Pattern, AH 1324 (1906/7). Kashgar (Shufu) Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-30.
L&M-739 (this coin illustrated [6th/7th/8th ed.]); K-Unlisted; KM-Pn40; WS-1216; SGSC-109 (this coin illustrated).
An EXCEPTIONAL RARITY from the Sinkiang series, this monumental pattern offering--one of likely just two known--stands apart from other pattern issues from the province in that it was struck to the kuping standard as opposed to the hsiangping, as would normally be encountered in the province. In fact, this type represents a very early provincial adaptation to the new standard issued by the Ministry of Finance in 1906--a time when many other provinces balked at the change of standards. Despite some moderate wear and subtle abrasions across the surfaces, this example remains rather clear and impressive, with a mostly untoned dragon side and a characters side that employs a subtle cobalt hue. A type that, given the extreme paucity of examples available, is no doubt missing from even the most advanced collections of not only Sinkiang coinage, but the vintage Chinese series more broadly. Accordingly, this aspect can be observed by the fact that this specimen stands as the plated example in the newest edition of L&M. Even when many other examples have changed over the course of subsequent editions of the reference, such as the 6th edition, this piece continues to serve as the image for the tremendously important type. From the SGSC Collection.
