(t) CHINA. Tibet. Silver 20 Srang Pattern, BE 15-54 (1920). Gser Khang Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-61. cf. L&M-1063B (for regular issue in gold); cf. Fr-1 (same); cf. K-1589 (same, though patterns in copper & brass are mentioned) & 1586y (for a silver issue from BE 15-51) & 1443 (pl. 178 only, not in text); cf. KM-Y-22 (same); cf. WS-0186 (same); TARNS (Tibetan Autonomous Region Numismatic Society)-1-197a. An IMMENSE RARITY, this off-metal issue stands as the lesser of just two observed in the PCGS census, the other being assessed SPECIMEN-63--though possessing less overall eye appeal in the opinion of this cataloger. Pleasingly struck, with a delightful, even nature to its manufacture, and a charming amber-gray tone that intensifies around portions of the devices. Kann posits that an example in silver (which he only notes for BE 15-51 [1917]) "...represents either an essay, or else a mint sport." Interestingly, he plates an example presumably in silver with this date (pl. 178, # 1443), though no such entry appears in the text for K-1443, as the numbering jumps from 1442b to 1444. Regardless of their intended nature, these off-metal strikings are no doubt contemporary to the gold issues and represent an incredible opportunity for the advanced collector of the Tibetan series.Ex: Heritage 3037 (1/2015) Lot # 30827.Ex: Stacks Bowers & Ponterio 178 (8/2013) Lot # 50662.
