FRANCE. Constitution. Copper Écu de 6 Livres Essai (Pattern), Year 2/1791. Paris Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS SPECIMEN-64 Brown. Maz-60 var. (plain edge); Gad-47.(b); Ciani-2229A. Lettered edge. By J.-P. Droz. Weight: 22.14 gms. Paralleling the silver striking, this copper issue with a lettered edge also stands as an strongEXTREMELY RARE/strong and immensely desirable issue. About it, Margolis writes that "em...this copper striking with lettered edge is the only example known to this cataloguer, although another may eventually surface. It is considerably rarer than the silver, five examples of which have been seen by me, of a likely total of eight believed to have been struck. Although this particular example is basically in as struck condition, the slight flatness of the hair around and above the ear on the obverse, and of the arm of the Genius on the reverse, indicates to me that a copper specimen or specimens must have been used to test and adjust the striking pressure of the dies prior to the silver specimens being struck./em" From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from the Farouk Collection in March 1954).pEx: Palace Collections of Egypt [King Farouk] (Sothebys - 3/1954) Lot # 2173 (part of).pEx: Wayte Raymond (3/1942) Lot # 561.pEx: Virgil M.
