SHANGHAI: 20 cent token, ND, Chinese junk similar to the standard circulation silver dollar design // SILVER DOLLAR BAR / 18-20 RUE CHU PAO SAN, with numeral "20" at center, XF. Rue Chu-Pao-San was a small alley in the French Concession of old Shanghai. According to the Huangpu District Gazetteer, the street had a total length of 138m and a width of 12m. It was named after Mr. Zhu Bao San, a veteran businessman and philanthropist who set up China's first modern bank, the Commercial Bank of China, and engaged in various businesses in Shanghai for over 60 years. After his death on September 2, 1926, concession authorities renamed the former Pei Zhen Road Rue Chu-Pao-San in his honor. But despite its official name, it was known among sailors and soldiers as "Blood Alley", for it was a street of sin and vice just a few steps off the Bund, where fights broke out every night. Among its establishments were George's Bar, Laci Bar, Finnemore's Bar, the Silver Dollar Bar, the Manhattan Bar, Pop's Place, as well as casinos, cabarets, fancy restaurants, cafes, and brothels. Many foreign sailors came here in the 1930s for alcohol, gambling, jazz, and other pleasures, and they often ended up fighting in the alley, sometimes with deadly consequences. In 1949, the new government changed the name of the street to Xikou Road and put an end to the illicit activities.
