ITALIAN EAST AFRICA. Banca dItalia. 1000 Lire, 1938. P-4a. Italian Occupation WWII. PMG Very Fine 25. Overprint "Serie Speciale Africa Orientale Italiana." The highest denomination for the series, and found with the earlier 1938 date. When Fascist Italy began circulating currency in Ethiopia and other areas of East Africa, the Thaler was replaced by this series of notes. A scant few have come forth today, and we can recall handling just a few examples in our lengthy auction history. The colors remain bold, with the design retaining excellent appeal for the assigned condition. Scarce, and sure to attract attention from collectors of Italian and Occupational currency. From the Al Kugel Collection.
