SPAIN, Madrid, gold cob 1 escudo, Charles II, assayer M, simple shield with castles and lions only (ca. 1690). Cal-Type 128; Fr-229. 3.36 grams. Choice full cross, off-center shield with bold assayer •M• reading vertically inside kings name CAROL(VS) to left (curiously with the A and R in monogram), AU grade but somewhat caked with encrustation in crevices. Note: There is a possibility this issue was made in Seville instead, per Calicó 847, described as "Maria type obverse," but the assayer on that issue is horizontal instead of vertical.
