(t) CHINA--EMPIRE. Shing Nih Chartered Bank Limited. 1 Dollar, c.1908. P-Unlisted. PMG Very Fine 25.Hankow, Hupeh Province. Serial number 006443. Black and orange, facing dragons and fireball at upper centre, vignette of steam locomotive and bank building at lower left and right, reverse black and brown, English text, hand signed signatures at lower left and right. A typical Qing era design gracefully melded with contemporary design elements and English text, resulting in a unique note. <p>The Bank was founded in Hangzhou in 1907 by Zhejiang Provincial Railway Company with a capital of one million dollars. Offices opened in Shanghai and Hankow in the following year. In 1914, the Zhejiang Provincial Railway Company was nationalised and shares in the Bank were sold to investors. In five of the years between 1918 to 1937 the Bank had to largest savings deposits of the various commercial banks in operation.<p>Following the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China, the Bank was absorbed into the Peoples Bank of China whilst its Hong Kong branches remain independent. The Bank was incorporated into the Bank of China (HK) group in 1990 before being fully integrated as BOCHK branched in 2001. <p>A phenomenally rare Qing era note from this large commercial bank. The first time offered in a public auction in years and bound to stir up immense interest in notaphily circles. <p>
