Set of (4) 1873 Inter-State Industrial Exposition Second Anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire Medals. Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated. 51 mm. Lot of four varieties that utilize the U.S. Mint die from the Chicago Fire medal showing the city in flames, but paired with a new reverse inscribed SECOND ANNIVERSARY MEMORIAL / IN COMMEMORATION OF THE GREAT CHICAGO FIRE, OCTOBER 8-9 1871 / MADE AT / THE INTER-STATE / INDUSTRIAL / EXPOSITION. All are struck in a dense white metal, plated in silver or gold. There is a standard silver color medal without a hole, as well as two in the same finish, but with a raised projection at 12 oclock to accommodate a hole for suspension. One of these is already pierced, but the other never received its hole. The gold plated one is holed through the projection at the top. These are noted by Julian in his Mint medal catalog, but are not listed because while they utilize a Mint-produced die, they are not a Mint product. From our March 2021 Auction, lot 7646.
