Boston, Massachusetts. Continental Bank. ND (18xx). $3. MA-160 G6a. PCGS Currency Gem New 65 PPQ. Remainder. ABNC. Green frame and ends, micro-lettered THREE protectors. Top center, The White Bear as engraved by DeWitt Clinton Hay after Felix O.C. Darley features a scene of desperation in which four men in a small dinghy are attempting to fend off a frenzied polar bear, albeit with limited success. Indeed an unusual choice of vignette for an American bank, yet one possibly inspired by the Kane Expedition to the Arctic. A portrait of General Joseph Warren is featured at right while a rendition of the Massachusetts state seal occupies left.
