1916 Buffalo Nickel. Proof-66 (PCGS). The satiny surfaces of this attractive Gem Proof Buffalo nickel are aglow with pale sky blue, rose, and gold iridescence that shines forth brightly in a strong light source. The strike is needle-sharp with every tiny detail of Frasers ever-popular all-American design type present and accounted for. This sparkling beauty represents the final year of the early Proof Buffalo nickels; the Proofs began again in the series in 1936 after a 20 year hiatus. As noted in David Langes reference on the series: "Some portion of the 600 pieces coined was almost certainly consigned to oblivion when the Mint ceased sales of Proof coins at the end of the year. Among the rare survivors, Gems are the rule. It seems that collectors recognized the added value of these Proofs early on and took care to preserve them." The present Gem was certainly handled with kid gloves throughout its lifetime as one glance will prove. The bidding will be substantial when this lot crosses the auction block. PCGS# 3993. NGC ID: 278V.
