Undated (ca. 1776-1814) George III Indian Peace Medal. Struck Solid Silver. First Size. Adams 7.3 (Obverse 3, Reverse B). Choice Fine. 77.3 mm. 1300.7 grains. Original suspension hanger lost, with the usual piercing at 12 oclock expanded in size from additional use. Obverse die unsigned. Obv: Youthful mantled bust of George III, right. Rev: The royal arms and supporters. A well-used example of this classic medal that has fortunately seen little abuse. The details of the highest points of relief are largely smoothed from wear, while under close inspection, the surfaces display myriad tiny marks. A more pronounced mark is seen right of the Kings face, but this is a minor detail on such a pleasantly worn example. Medium gray silver dominates, while there are accents of golden-brown and blue in places. An essentially ideal example of the type that certainly was worn for a long time by a Native American allied with the British. To quote Adams, "the undated standard medal covers a lot of history...to touch one is to touch the Indian who wore it and to share his history." From the Ronald A. Slovick Family Collection. Earlier from our (Bowers and Merenas) sale of the Hoke S. Greene Collection, June 1985, lot 2420.
