SZECHUAN: Republic, AE 10 cash token, ND, CL-SCM.21, horse & orchid "ma lan" token, brass variety, an attractive example, PCGS graded AU55. Sichuan tokens are reported to come in a variety of metals: brass, copper and copper-nickel in diameters ranging from 21mm to 40mm corresponding the sizes of 5, 10, 20, 30 and 100 cash coins. They were struck in the Chengdu and Chongqing Mints by the warlords and high government officials of Sichuan (Szechuan), circa 1921-1930 and primarily used as gambling tokens. Being superior in quality to the standard cash coins then in circulation, these tokens were readily accepted by the public as legal tender whenever the recipients were willing to part with them.
