THAILAND: Rama IV, 1851-1868, AV fuang (1.67g), ND (1856), Cr-175, Fr-24, Krisadaolarn-F403 (same dies as both examples), royal crown // Thai legend krung / thep ("Bangkok"), showing multiple striking as is normal for this type, lightly lustrous fields, PCGS graded AU55, RRR, ex Don Erickson Collection. Known in Thai numismatics as Krung Thep Gold, this coin is a part of an extremely rare hammered transitional series, struck ca. 1856 to alleviate a shortage in bullet coins before the arrival of modern minting machinery from England. It is an exact die-match with the only two other examples of this type to our knowledge (including the example in the Taisei-Baldwin-Gillio Singapore Auction in March 1996), both illustrated in Ronachai Krisadaolarns book, Siamese Coins: From Funan to the Fifth Reign.
