CUBA. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1813-15). Ferdinand VII. NGC AU-53. EMO-325.2 (Plate coin); KM-1 (as Maracaibo); Cal-102 (Same). An exceptional example of this RARE type. Rather well-struck and sparingly handled, the coin exhibits rich brown patina and remains delightfully free from the corrosion or damage so regularly seen on the issue.

Once believed to be a necessity issue by royalists of Maracaibo during the Venezuelan War of Independence, evidence uncovered by the late numismatic researcher Luis Ponte Puigbo at the Archivo de las Indias in Seville confirms that this issue was actually intended for use in Cuba, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico. Though the coins precise mint location remains uncertain, the previous attribution to Maracaibo can now be dismissed. To view all items from the EMO Collection, click here. From the EMO Collection.

Privately purchased from Freeman Craig.
