Obverse: Jugate and wreathed heads of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette left; Reverse: Executioner on stage with guillotine, displaying severed head to large crowd gathered around. A rather morbid medal of German production, this piece offers well-detailed portraits of the unfortunate French royal couple on the obverse and an elaborate execution scene on the reverse. Lovely pewter-gray tone and glistening luster give the medal much presence and eye appeal. Evidence of the noted mount removal is seen on the edge but is hardly a distraction.
