Black wood block printing and red, two boys holding a cash coin Guangxu Tong Bao, 100 Cash, reverse green, geometric guilloche. I Ho or Ewo is the name of Jardine Matheson, a present day multinational conglomerate. Jardine and Matheson Company was founded in 1832 and took its name from Ewo Hong, a reputable Hong that was ran by Howqua (Wu Guoying). It is unknown exactly why this note was issued in Swatow but given the Companys quick expansion and coverage of the China trade it is not surprising that they did.
This note is one of the earliest, if not actually the earliest Swatow named notes and the only one extant. This, together with the intricate traditional Chinese design, results in the note being extremely attractive and desirable. The crown piece to any collection of Swatow or Guangdong banknotes.
