CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 3 Candareens (Dollar), ND (1889). Kwangtung Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). NGC AU Details--Obverse Scratched. L&M-123; K-16; KM-Y-198; WS-0931; Wenchao-552 (rarity: ★★★★). The initial output from Kwangtung, this slightly heavier format, weighing a single Candareen higher than what would become standard in a failed attempt to drive out lesser-weight foreign coins , also features a design that proved rather unpopular with the populace. The pairing of the English legends with that of the Chinese was off-putting, leading not only to the dropping in weight, but also the swapping of the English legends to the dragon side. As such, the name for this type has become known as the "Seven Three Reversed Pattern." Quite elegant on account of the dies and machinery for production being imported from the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, this towers with its charming refinement and craftsmanship. An EXTREMELY RARE offering, it is not held back by the scratched notation for the dragon side, as these aspects occur near the edge and do not impact the design elements. Meanwhile, the level of handling is held to a minimum, with a deep gray tone throughout, along with some subtle iridescence upon the characters side. Overall, a tremendous opportunity for a type that we have offered only sparingly in the past decade-plus.
