CHINA. Kiau Chau. 5 Cents, 1909. Berlin Mint. Wilhelm II. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. KM-1; K-873; J-729. Pale tan surfaces seem slightly too flat and matte-like to earn a numerical grade from PCGS. Nonetheless, with nearly complete detail remaining, this is a good bargain candidate for those who want an affordable Kiau Chau issue.
According to Kann, the Kiau Chau 5 and 10 Cents entered circulation in October of 1909. The German involvement in World War I found the port of Kiau Chau under British and Japanese siege on August 27th, 1914, and ended on November 7th and Kiau Chau remained under Japanese control until returned to China in 1922.
