1872-S Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-60 (PCGS). This highly lustrous, pinkish-honey example is sharply to fully struck from the dies. The mintage for the 1872-S amounted to 780,000 pieces, reduced by 148,000 coins from the previous dates total at the San Francisco Mint. As with many issues from the era, some portion of the mintage for the 1872-S found its way into overseas banking and bullion transactions. Perhaps 150 or so Mint State coins are known today, with the preponderance of such pieces at the basal MS-60 level or slightly finer. Any Uncirculated 1872-S double eagle is clearly a scarce coin, especially with the attractively original surfaces offered here. PCGS# 8965. NGC ID: 26AF. From the Fairmont Collection - Rhone Set.
