CHINA. Shanghai. Hall & Holtz, Ltd. Copper-Nickel 1/2 Loaf Merchant Token, ND (1900-25). NGC MS-61. Prid-329. A most interesting merchant token, this piece would have entitled the holder to half a loaf of bread at their bakery. A piece that is well preserved with strong luster and limited signs of handling.
Hall and Holtz was built at the beginning of the 20th Century on the corner of Nanking and Szechuan roads in Shanghai and opened as a bakery. The store soon developed into a large department store specializing in many western goods that were imported into China. The building stood until 1936, by which time it had developed into somewhat of a Shanghai landmark. The building was demolished in 1936 and in its place the Liza Hardoon Building was erected, where it still stands today as an office building.
