1809 James Madison Indian Peace Medal. Bronze. Second Size. Julian IP-6, Prucha-40. First Reverse. MS-61 BN (NGC). 62 mm. A light old cleaning on the obverse almost certainly accounts for the grade, but the eye appeal is fairly good, and the reverse is far superior in quality. Faintly rosy brown on the obverse with a couple of small patina spots and even hairlines. The obverse was likely so handled in an effort to remove what appeared to be surface debris, but was actually patches of aggressive spalling that is seen on all of these bronze strikes. This obverse, in this state, is known to be paired with both the original reverse die, as here, and that prepared for the Zachary Taylor medals in 1849.
