GERMANY. Mecklenburg-Schwerin. "Fearful" Taler, 1848-A. Berlin Mint. Friedrich Franz II. PCGS AU-58. Dav-727; KM-304. Displaying only a hint of circulation upon the highest points and retaining excellent luster within the protected areas, this specimen is enchantingly original.
The so-called "fearful" nature of this Taler refers to the fact that the "by the grace of God" portion of the title that normally would appear within the obverse legend has been left off. This was a direct result of the Grand Dukes concern over revolutionary sentiments within his peerage during the pivotal year of 1848. As such, this lack of reference to a divine right was seen as his "fearing a revolution," hence the appellation.
