China - Provincial. TAIWAN: Kuang Hsu, 1875-1895, AR 5 cents, ND (1893-94), Y-246, L&M-329, Kann-135, exceedingly rare, PCGS graded VF Details (scratch), RRR. Taiwan did not have any machine-struck coinage until 1893, when the provincial government began producing silver 10 cents (7.2 mace) and 5 cents (3.6 mace). The output lasted for about a year and was permanently terminated when the Qing government ceded the island to Japan following the First Sino-Japanese (Jiawu) War. While the 10 cents is somewhat scarce, the 5 cents is exceedingly rare, with only two examples appearing in public auctions in the past 15 years: the Åke Lindén example in 2014, and the Norman Jacobs example in 2008.
