Roman Empire, Domitian (81-96), Triumph over the Chatti, Commemorative AV Aureus, struck AD 90-91, Rome, DOMITIANVS AVGVSTVS, laureate head right, rev. GERMANICVS COS XV, Germania seated upon shield right, resting head in mourning in left hand, broken spear in exergue, 7.42g [114.5grns], 7h (Cohen 156; BMC 174; RIC II, 699; BN 164; Biaggi 414; Calicó 846; Ransom 21 same dies; Nordheim 1227 same dies), an undoubtedly self-aggrandised but nevertheless characterful portrait of the unexpected Emperor, forever in the Flavian shadow of his father and brother, much like the recumbent personification of Germania here; with oozing lustre from mint fresh fields, only the deftest softening of dies to finest details, otherwise practically as struck, very rare in this stupendous condition and especially historic given its issue soon after the crushing of Governor L. Antonius Saturninus Rebellion in Mogontiacum in January 89
