1776 Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny. George III Irish Type. Potato Head Family. Dies 9-F. Choice Extremely Fine. This is one of the finest Potato Heads in this select offering of counterfeit halfpence from Syds collection and is by extension one of the finest known examples of the Potato Head Family of any die pairing. Surfaces are light brown, glossy and of choice quality for any colonial coin, much less this crudely executed contemporary counterfeit halfpenny. The obverse is perfectly centered, framing the childishly engraved obverse effigy and legends, while the reverse is a bit off-center on this out-of-round flan, shaving off about half of the letters HIB. Representatives of the Potato Head Family are charming for their utter crudity of engraving and production, and if one doesnt wish to embark on the challenge of a set by die pairing, then this essentially perfect example would be ideal to include in a high quality type set of counterfeit halfpence. The obverse plate coin for this rare die pairing in the Potato Head Family chapter authored by Moore and Rock in the Contemporary Counterfeit Halfpenny & Farthing Families reference. From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier pedigree not recorded.
