(t) HONG KONG. Dollar, 1868. Hong Kong Mint. Victoria. NGC PROOF-62.KM-10; Mars-C41; Prid-3 (unlisted as Proof); Mars-C41. A marvelous and RARE emission of the Hong Kong Mint, this Dollar offers the specialist in Hong Kong coinage the opportunity to own an example that may not be repeated soon. This coin exhibits all of the traits expected of a proof striking, with highly reflective fields accentuating the matte finish on the portrait and devices. A few light handling marks consistent with the assigned grade. Pewter colored tone is evident in the legends and protected areas of the hair and tiara, with the balance of the obverse remaining bright and fresh. The reverse is equally impressive, with shades of gunmetal blue highlighting the decorative design along the periphery. A coin that will no doubt become the centerpiece of the collection it enters, and which will add tremendous prestige to other coins housed alongside it.A constituent part of a cased proof set that first appeared in September of 2007 at Spink Auction #7023 as lot #236. The unique set had previously remained within the same family for more than 100 years, originally having been acquired in Hong Kong. At the time this dollar was produced in Hong Kong, the facility was a branch mint of the British Royal Mint, an arrangement that ended the same year this piece was struck with the minting machinery being sold and shipped to Japan. All subsequent coinage after 1868 intended for Hong Kong was struck in England, much of it at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham. Hence, the coin offered here represents the last of a failed British attempt to establish a mint in Hong Kong during the 19th century.
