(t) CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), ND (1890-1908). Kwangtung Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS AU-55.cf. L&M-133B (rosettes slightly smaller, no raised swirl on fiery pearl); K-26; KM-Y-203; cf. WS-0941 (same). Variety with medium rosettes (struck from Heaton Mint dies) and with raised swirl on fiery pearl. A very interesting and seemingly VERY RARE specimen, this crown--at first glance--appears simply to be L&M-133B, with the smaller rosettes and unconnected 廣 and 庫 characters, but a closer look reveals that the rosettes arent quite as small and square as normally encountered with the type. There is a slightly rounded nature reminiscent of the local Kwangtung dies, but there is seemingly still the refinement of the Heaton dies. Further, there is a raised swirl on the fiery pearl below the dragons mouth, an additional oddity that does not seem to appear on either the Heaton or locally engraved dies. As such, this specimen may serve as a transitional issue between the two, or represent a peculiar dragon side die from Heaton that simply doesnt share all of the aspects with other such examples. A great opportunity for the specialist, and with a host coin that is attractively toned and problem-free.
